The Lok Sabha Housing Committee on Monday issued notice to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, directing him to vacate the government bungalow at 12, Tughlaq Lane in central Delhi by April 22. The notice was served two days after Gandhi was disqualified as a member of parliament after being convicted in a defamation case.
Gandhi was disqualified from the Lok Sabha on Friday, a day after a court in Gujarat’s Surat convicted him in a 2019 defamation case over his alleged remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The court awarded the Congress leader two years imprisonment.
The disqualification will prevent Gandhi, a four-time MP, from contesting elections for eight years unless a higher court stays the conviction. Gandhi was an MP from Kerala’s Wayanad from where he won the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Prior to that, he represented the Amethi parliamentary seat in Lok Sabha from 2004 to 2019.
According to report, Gandhi will require a no-objection certificate from the New Delhi Municipal Council before vacating his official bungalow. The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), which looks after water and electricity supplies in these Central Public Works Department bungalows, has been marked a copy of the Lok Sabha Housing Committee’s letter asking Gandhi to vacate his accommodation.
