Focus on controlling stray dogs menace in Hyderabad

Arvind Kumar, Special Chief Secretary to the Government has directed the officials, to pay special attention on the controlling of stray dogs menace in GHMC limits. To take an action plan on war footing to prevent the menace of stray dogs in the limits of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation and other Municipalities in the state.

In view of the death of a five-year-old boy due to stray dogs, he held ahigh level meeting with senior officials.   GHMC Officials briefed that there are currently five lakh fifty thousand stray dogs in the GHMC area, which was 8 lakh 50 thousand in the past (2011) but reduced the figure with sterilization operations conducted earlier. At present the number has come down to 5 lakh 50 thousand.

He instructed the GHMC officials the ABC (Animal Birth Control) sterilization operations should be carried out immediately and also to put some water points (water storage facility) in those localities, colonies. The municipal authorities have been directed to restrict the hotels, restaurants, function halls, chicken centers and mutton centers within the GHMC limits from dumping waste on the streets.

Due to the possible increase in the number of stray dogs in the city, it was ordered to take appropriate measures to prevent them immediately.  He suggested the awareness programs also should be conducted for students in government and private schools in the city. School students are burdened by lack of awareness about pet dogs.

The officials were advised to take control measures with the help of Slum Development Federations, Town Development Federations and Resident Colony Welfare Associations within the limits of the city and neighbor municipalities. As well as to take control measures in other municipalities in the state with the help of SHGs.

He advised officials to prepare a separate mobile app for registration of pets in the localities of city limits. And also to steps should be taken to register complaints related to this through My GHMC App No. 040 – 21111111. He directed the officials to develop a mobile app soon to identify the number of pet dogs in the city and surrounding municipalities. So as to issue an identity card will be issued to the concerned owners as per registration. 

He said that the areas where most of the cases are registered should be identified and immediate action should be taken there. The authorities have been directed to move veterinary teams in those areas and take appropriate measures to curb them and also to pay special attention to the closed transportation area.
