Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s mother Hiraben (99) passed away at a hospital in Ahmedabad on Friday. She was admitted to Ahmedabad’s U N Mehta Hospital on Wednesday morning. She was reportedly suffering from breathing problems.
A medical bulletin released by the hospital mentioned that she passed away at 3.30am. The two-line bulletin does not mention anything else.
PM Modi shared the sad news on Twitter. Informing about her demise, the Prime Minister posted a heartfelt tweet early Friday morning, “A glorious century rests at the feet of God… In Maa, I have always felt that trinity, which contains the journey of an ascetic, the symbol of a selfless Karmayogi and a life committed to values.”
PM Modi recalled his visit to his mother on her 100th birthday this year. “When I met her on her 100th birthday, she said one thing, which is always remembered that work with intelligence, live life with purity, that is, work with intelligence and live life with purity,” PM Modi tweeted.
She stayed with her younger son and Modi’s younger brother Pankaj Modi at Vrundravan Bungalows at Raysan. Top political leaders have taken to social media and expressed grief over her death and sent condolence messages. More details, including that of cremation, are awaited.
Hiraba is survived by her sons Somabhai, Amrut, Prahladbhai, Narendra and Pankaj, and daughter Vasant. During his visits to Gujarat, it was Modi’s ritual to visit his mother, whenever possible, at Raysan. She had also voted in the assembly elections that were held earlier this month.
Hiraba spent a sizable number of years in north Gujarat’s Vadnagar—the PM’s birthplace. A few years ago, Modi had hosted her at his official residence in New Delhi. Modi in the past has often referred to their humble background and even mentioned that his mother used to clean utensils for their livelihood.
