The no-confidence motion moved by the Opposition parties against the BJP government in the Centre will be discussed from August 8-10. While the debate will be held on August 8 and 9, the Prime Minister will reply to the motion on August 10.
The no-trust motion was moved by the Opposition’s INDIA bloc last week demanding that the Prime minister speak on the Manipur situation inside the House. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla admitted the motion on July 26.
The dates were fixed at the Lok Sabha’s business advisory committee meeting. But, both the opposition bloc INDIA and the Bharat Rashtra Samithi, which also moved a no-trust motion, stayed away from the meet after demanding that the House take it up immediately.
They also protested against the government passing the bills when the motion was pending. However, the government has insisted that there are no rules or precedence which make it mandatory for the House to take up the no-confidence motion immediately.
It has argued that rules state the motion should be taken up for discussion within 10 working days of being admitted. The motion is doomed to fail as the opposition grouping has less than 150 members in the Lok Sabha. Despite that, the Opposition believe they can “win the battle of perception” by cornering the government and making it accountable on the Manipur issue, which the government has so far sought to avoid in Parliament.
