Nation condones the passing away of melody queen Lata Mangeshkar. President, Vice President and Prime Minister led them. Government of India declared two day national condolences.
President Ram Nath Kovind on Sunday said the passing away of iconic singer Lata Mangeshkar is heartbreaking for him, as for millions the world over. The divine voice has gone quiet forever but her melodies will remain immortal, echoing in eternity, he said. Mangeshkar died on Sunday at a Mumbai hospital.
“Lata-ji’s demise is heart-breaking for me, as it is for millions the world over. In her vast range of songs, rendering the essence and beauty of India, generations found expression of their inner-most emotions. A Bharat Ratna, Lata-ji’s accomplishments will remain incomparable,” Kovind tweeted.
“An artist born but once in centuries, Lata-didi was an exceptional human being, full of warmth, as I found whenever I met her. The divine voice has gone quiet forever but her melodies will remain immortal, echoing in eternity. My condolences to her family and admirers everywhere,” he said.
The Prime Minister has spoken to her family and expressed his condolences. He also said that the coming generations will remember her as a stalwart of Indian culture, whose melodious voice had an unparalleled ability to mesmerise people.
In a series of tweets, the Prime Minister said;

“Lata Didi’s songs brought out a variety of emotions. She closely witnessed the transitions of the Indian film world for decades. Beyond films, she was always passionate about India’s growth. She always wanted to see a strong and developed India.”
“I consider it my honour that I have always received immense affection from Lata Didi. My interactions with her will remain unforgettable. I grieve with my fellow Indians on the passing away of Lata Didi. Spoke to her family and expressed condolences. Om Shanti.”
Vice President, Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu has expressed his profound grief on the passing away of legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar. Condoling the death of the ‘Nightingale of India Cinema’, Shri Naidu said that “India has lost its voice in the death of Lata Ji”.
“I am extremely saddened by the demise of Lata Mangeshkar Ji, the Nightingale of Indian Cinema and legendary singer. India has lost its voice in the death of Lata ji, who has enthralled music lovers in India and across the globe with her mellifluous and sublime voice for several decades.
She was truly a musical Ratna and had ruled the Hindi Cinema like a Queen for several decades. She has been the favourite and most sought after female playback singer of music composers.
Following her foray into playback singing way back in the 1940s, she achieved first major breakthrough in Mahal movie in 1949. Lata ji became an overnight singing sensation with the song Aayega Aanewala and there was no looking back for her after that.
Lata ji was honoured with Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, even as accolades and awards poured her way from India and abroad. From bhajans to romantic numbers to patriotic songs, she has recorded thousands of songs in Hindi and other Indian and foreign languages. With a heavy heart, I convey my profound condolences to the bereaved family members and her fans across India and the globe.”
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday condoled the passing away of singing legend Lata Mangeshkar, and said her mesmerising voice filled the lives of every generation not only in India but across the globe.
“Lata didi, with her melodious and mesmerising voice, has filled the lives of every generation not only in India but all over the world with the sweetness of Indian music. It is not possible to put into words her contribution to the music world. Her death is a personal loss for me,” Shah tweeted in Hindi.
The home minister said he considered himself fortunate to have received Mangeshkar’s affection and blessings from time to time. “With her incomparable patriotism, sweet speech and gentleness, she will always be among us. I express my condolences to her family and countless fans. Om Shanti,” he said.
