Samajwadi Party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav breathed his last on Monday. The former Uttar Pradesh chief minister was battling for life and was in a critical condition for several days.

The development was confirmed by Yadav’s son and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav. A post by the official handle of the Samajwadi Party read, “my respected father and everyone’s Netaji is no more.” The tweet was posted by his son Akhilesh Yadav.

Yadav was kept under life-saving drugs in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Medanta hospital in Gurugram.  On Sunday, the hospital issued a statement informing about the critical condition of the Samajwadi Party supremo.

“Mulayam Singh Yadav ji’s condition is quite critical today and he is on life-saving drugs. He is being treated in the ICU of Medanta Hospital, Gurugram, by a comprehensive team of specialists,” the hospital said in a health bulletin.

Yadav, 82, was admitted to the hospital on August 22 and was shifted to the ICU on October 2. He was elected an MLA 10 times and an MP, mostly from Mainpuri and Azamgarh, seven times.

He was also the Defence Minister (1996-98), and chief minister thrice (1989–91, 1993–95, and 2003–07). And briefly, he even appeared to have a shot at the prime minister’s post.

Yadav was born to Murti Devi and Sughar Singh Yadav on November 22, 1939 in Saifai village, Etawah district, UP. He held 3 degrees in political science — BA from Karm Kshetra Post Graduate College in Etawah, BT from AK College in Shikohabad, and MA from BR College, Agra University.

PM Modi mourns death

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday condoled the death of former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav. Taking to Twitter, PM Narendra Modi posted a series of pictures with the Samajwadi Party supremo.

“Mulayam Singh Yadav Ji distinguished himself in UP and national politics. He was a key soldier for democracy during the Emergency. As Defence Minister, he worked for a stronger India. His Parliamentary interventions were insightful and emphasised on furthering national interest,” PM Narendra Modi said.

“I had many interactions with Mulayam Singh Yadav Ji when we served as Chief Ministers of our respective states. The close association continued and I always looked forward to hearing his views. His demise pains me. Condolences to his family and lakhs of supporters. Om Shanti,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in another tweet.
