The Election Commission (EC) on Friday declared the by-election results of seven assembly seats including Dhanpur and Boxanagar in Tripura, Bageshwar in Uttarakhand, Puthuppally in Kerala, Dumri in Jharkhand, Ghosi in Uttar Pradesh and Dhupguri in West Bengal. BJP won bypolls in Tripura and Uttarakhand, TMC in West Bengal, Congress in Kerala, JMM in Jharkhand and Samajwadi Party (SP) in Uttar Pradesh.
A high voter turnout was recorded in most of the seven assembly constituencies in six states where by-elections were held on September 5. The by-election saw I.N.D.I.A bloc putting up a united front in Ghosi constituency in Uttar Pradesh, where the voting was moderate at around 50.30 per cent, and in Jharkhand’s Dumri where a total of 64.84 per cent of 2.98 lakh voters exercised their franchise. In Ghosi, SP candidate Sudhakar Singh won by a huge margin of 42,759 votes.
The Ghosi bypoll was necessitated by the resignation of Chauhan, who had won the seat in the 2022 Uttar Pradesh assembly polls, from the Samajwadi Party in July. He returned to the BJP and was fielded by the party in the bypoll.
In a post shared on his X handle, former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav said that the people of Ghosi not only helped the candidate of the Samajwadi Party win but also of the INDIA alliance.
In the 2022 polls, Chauhan had defeated BJP candidate Vijay Kumar Rajbhar by a margin of 22,216 votes. This time, Chauhan is being supported by NDA partners Apna Dal (Sonelal), Nirbal Indian Shoshit Hamara Aam Dal (NISHAD) Party and Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party, a former SP ally.
