In an unprecedented breach of security on the 22nd anniversary of Parliament House attack, a youth from the visitors’ gallery jumped into the House chamber and started climbing up desks and raising slogans and the other dangled from the visitors’ gallery and sprayed some yellow-coloured fumes.

An unidentified man jumped from the visitor’s gallery number four of the Lok Sabha into the chamber around 1pm on Monday while the Winter Session was progressing.

Another was seen dangling from the public gallery spraying some foul-smelling yellow gas, when Zero Hour was in progress, reports said. The development comes on the anniversary of the 2001 Parliament attack hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Home Minister Amit Shah and oppositions leaders Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi and other Parliamentarians paid tribute to the fallen jawans.

The intruders were overpowered by the members and the watch and ward staff. BJP member Rajendra Agrawal, who was chairing the House, adjourned the proceedings till 2 pm. In a video, one person can be seen leaping over the benches of the Lok Sabha. They also shouted slogans like ‘tanashahi nahi chalegi’ (dictatorship will not be allowed).

Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said, “This is certainly a security breach because today we observed the death anniversary of people who sacrificed their lives in the 2001 (Parliament attack).” Another man and woman were seen seen spraying some yellow gas outside the Parliament. They were also detained.

In a post on X, Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi said, “Saw two young men unleash foul smelling yellow coloured gas from canisters inside Parliament gallery. MPs rushed to grab these men. One person was raising some slogans. This raises serious questions on another aspect of the new Parliament building- security.”
