Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India will strive to ensure that the G20 becomes a ‘global prime mover’ to envision new ideas. Modi was speaking at the concluding ceremony where Indonesia handed over the G20 presidency to India.

Modi said that India was taking charge at a time when the world is grappling with geopolitical tensions, economic slowdown and rising food and energy prices. “At such a time, the world is looking at the G-20 with hope. Today, I want to assure that India’s G20 presidency will be inclusive, ambitious, decisive, and action-oriented,” he said.

India will officially assume G20 presidency from December 1. Speaking on the theme of India’s G20 chairmanship, the PM stressed on the need of peace and security for future generations. “All these priorities are fully embodied in the these of India’s G20 chairmanship – ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future’,” he added.

Over the course of its presidency, India will organise several meetings in multiple Indian cities. “Our guests will get a full experience of India’s amazing diversity, inclusive traditions, and cultural richness. We wish that all of you will participate in this unique celebration in India, the ‘Mother of Democracy’,” he added.

In the declaration issued on the concluding day, member nations acknowledged the need to adhere to international law for peace, in the backdrop of the Russia-Ukraine crisis.

“Today’s era must not be of war,” the declaration said, echoing the remark made by Modi during his bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the margins of the SCO summit in September.

Most of the member states said that the Ukraine conflict was causing immense human suffering, exacerbating existing fragilities in the global economy, according to the declaration. The declaration also stressed the need to safeguard civilians during armed conflicts.
