Right now, the UK government is pushing through damaging legislation called the Nationality and Borders Bill. If passed, it would mean more people seeking safety will be forced into the hands of people smuggling gangs – who value profit over safety.
Expressing concern over the bill, Amnesty International, UK deplored that people are forced to turn to dangerous people smuggling gangs when they have no other choice. In the absence of any safer options, people risk their lives and wellbeing in the hope of reaching somewhere safe.
Providing asylum for those fleeing conflict and persecution is a responsibility shared by all countries – including the UK. But if this Bill is passed into law – it would mean the current policy of refusing any safe routes to seek asylum would be extended.
UK rules require asylum claims to be made in this country – and yet there are no visas available for anyone to come to the UK to seek asylum.
Tom Davies, Campaign Manager, Amnesty International, UK said that if passed, the Bill will have a devastating impact on the people’s lives who desperately need protection. The Bill would make it harder for families to be safely reunited with their loved ones in the UK, without the need for dangerous journeys. Instead of targeting people smugglers, it would target the victims”, he cautioned.
Tom Devies announced launching of ‘People Smuggling Ltd.’ campaign – a dark satirical take on the very real and damaging impact the Nationality and Borders Bill will have on the UK’s asylum system – to encourage people to act.
He cautioned that providing asylum for those fleeing conflict and persecution is a responsibility shared by all countries – including the UK. If passed, as the Government intends, this Bill will wreck the UK’s asylum system, which will have a devastating impact on the lives of people in need of protection, he added.
