Journalist and human rights defender Lukpan Akhmedyarov was detained  upon leaving the editorial office of the “Uralsk Week” in Uralsk, Kazakhstan, on January 7. Later the same day, he was sentenced to ten days of administrative arrest for participation in an unsanctioned demonstration. According to his lawyer, Mereke Gabdualiev, the human rights defender was present at the demonstration in his journalistic capacity, but the court refused to take this into account. On January 10, the court upheld the decision despite the appeal by Lukpan Akhmedyarov’ lawyer to his detention. World renowned Kathak dancer Pandit Birju Maharaj passed away at his residence in Delhi in the early hours of Monday, at his Delhi residence. Sunday, 16 January. The 83-year-old had reportedly suffered from a heart attack. Two trafficking survivors have brought a case against Italy and Libya to a UN committee. The two Nigerian women claim the countries failed to protect their rights and left them vulnerable to abuse and exploitation. The Italian legal rights association, ASGI (The Association for Juridical Studies on Immigration), helped the survivors take their case to the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW).
