In consideration of the fact that every student from India won a gold medal at the 34th International Biology Olympiad (IBO) 2023, which took place in Al Ain, UAE, from July 3-11, 2023, India topped the gold medals tally. This is the first time India has turned in an all-gold performance and topped the medals tally in IBO.
This year, the students were Mr. Dhruv Advani (Gold) from Bengaluru, Karnataka, Mr. Ishan Pednekar (Gold) from Kota, Rajasthan, Mr. Megh Chhabda (Gold) from Jalna, Maharashtra, and Mr. Rohit Panda (Gold) from Risali, Chattisgarh.
In addition to two leaders, Prof. Madan M. Chaturvedi (Former Senior Professor, Delhi University) and Dr. Anupama Ronad (HBCSE, TIFR), the team also included two scientific observers, Dr. V.V. Binoy (National Institute of Advanced Studies, Bengaluru) and Dr. Rambhadur Subedi (NIRRH, Mumbai).
This year’s IBO featured 293 students from 76 countries. Only one other nation, Singapore, managed to win four gold medals. In total, 29 gold medals were awarded.
In the past, India has topped the medals in the following categories: Junior Science (in 2014, 2019, 2021, and 2022), Astronomy & Astrophysics (in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2015, and 2021), and Physics (in 2018).
